Supermarine Spitfire V-A Wing Commander Douglas Bader
The Supermarine Spitfire, designed by R
J Mitchell, was the plane that won the Battle of Britain and was the most
successful RAF fighter of the Second World War.
The example shown here was a Mark VA (Five-A),
W3185, in which Wing Commander Douglas Bader, call-sign “Dog’s Body”, was shot
down on 9 August 1941.
Bader would later be knighted for his service.
The ‘Spit” was powered by a
Rolls-Royce Merlin 60 degree V-12 engine capable of pushing the plane to 387 mph
and a service ceiling of 35,000 ft.
Armament was 4 wing mounted 8 x 7.7 mm Browning
machineguns.
Many
consider the Spitfire to be one of the most beautiful airplanes ever build and
rank it up there with the P-51 Mustang.
