In March 1945, the United States Army Air Force contracted with Bell Aircraft to produce a rocket powered plane capable of flying faster than the speed of sound.  The plane remained in testing at Bell until June 1947, when the Army took over the project.  Aircraft # 46-062, was then delivered to the Army Air Force.

On 14 October, 1947, “Glamorous Glennis” was launched from the belly of the specially modified B-29, and Captain Charles “Chuck” Yeager became the first man to break the sound barrier.

That plane, Bell #46-062 is on permanent display at the Milestones of Flight Gallery of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

General Yeager has approved this illustration of the Bell X-1 he flew.
