P-40E "War Hawk" Flying Tiger flown by Lt. Col. Robert L. Scott
This historic aircraft, the Curtiss P-40E was flown by Lt. Col. Robert L. Scott Jr., Commander of the 23rd Fighter Group, USAAF, 14th Air Force. Col. Scott flew 388 missions from July of 1942 to October of 1943, and had 13 confirmed victories. Previously to being named the 23rd's commander, he had flown with Claire Chennault's Flying Tigers. After the war, Col. Scott wrote the best seller, "God Is My Copilot".
Built by the Curtiss Wright Company, the P-40, designed by Donovan Berlin, first flew in 1939. The Warhawk, with its famous shark's mouth cowling emblem and Allison V-1710 V-12 engine, was more than a match for Japanese fighters of the day. Production ended in 1944, with 13,738 ships built. The cost of a new P-40 was $44,900.00.
