The Python went
into production in 1955, and was instantly recognized as the top of the line
large handgun in the world. Excellent fit and finish, a very smooth trigger pull
and precision cylinder alignment are hallmarks of this extraordinary weapon.
Production stopped in 1998, although some were built in Colt’s Custom Shop until
2005. Some are still produced in the Colt Custom Shop renamed the Python Elite.
This double action, large frame revolver chambered the .357 Magnum cartridge recently developed by Smith & Wesson. Other features, like the full barrel underlug and vented upper rib, added to the gun's uniqueness and appeal. It was also available in 2.5, 4, 6 and 8 inch barrels.
