Illustrated here is the Colt 2nd Model 1848 Percussion Army Revolver, and is the 7th in a series of Classic World Firearms.  The big bore, .44 caliber, single action, six shot revolver was produced in Col. Sam Colt’s Hartford, Connecticut factory between 1848 and 1860 as a sidearm for the U.S. Mounted Rifles, know as Dragoons, from which the gun takes its nickname.  In three variations, the 1st, 2nd and 3rd models, about 18,500 revolvers were manufactured.  Most of them were the 3rd model, which had a production run of some 10,000.  Some of the 3rd Models were made with frame cuts to accept a shoulder stock and a folding leaf sight

This big gun weighted 4lbs and 4 ounces, was 14.75 inches long and had a 7 ½ inch barrel.  Sometimes called a horse pistol, it could be carried either in a belt holster or a saddle holster.
