Art print of the Thompson Submachine Gun M1A1

The Thompson Submachine Gun was invented by John Tallaferro Thompson in 1916, although the design wasn’t finalized until 1919.  He called it the Trench Broom, as his original idea, influenced by the trench fighting of the First World War, was for a weapon that could sweep trenches clean.

Never adopted by the services between the wars, the gun was finally accepted by the U. S. Army for use in World War II, where it became something of a status symbol and was highly prized by specialized and elite units.  In all, The Auto Ordnance Company built some 200,000 M1A1s.
