Lotus Cosworth 79 Mario Andretti 1978 F 1 World Champion - Belgium Grand Prix

This limit edition art print represents the Lotus Cosworth 79 in its livery at the Belgium Grand Prix, Circuit Zolder, Heusden, Belgium, 21 May, 1978.

The Lotus 79 was designed by Peter Wright and Colin Chapman to employ a radically new concept, which would later became known as Ground Effects.  In the 79 the underside of the car was shaped like an inverted airplane wing, creating a low pressure area, which ‘sucked’ the car to the track.  The result was a car that was successful right out of the box.

In its maiden outing, Mario Andretti took a convincing pole and a dominating win; arriving at the finish line nine seconds before teammate Ronnie Peterson in the second Team Lotus car.

This year, Andretti won seven poles and six races to claim the World Driver’s Championship for himself and the Constructor’s Title for Lotus.
