Ferrari 156 "Dino" Phil Hill 1961 Formula 1 World Champion - Belgium Grand Prix
The Ferrari 156, driven by Phil Hill, debuted in the 1961 Grand Prix season. That year saw a rules change in Formula 1 designed to significantly lower engine displacement from 2.5 to 1.5 litres. Scuderia Ferrari fielded four cars for the season, driven by Phil Hill, Wolfgang von Trips, Richie Ginther and Olivier Gendebien.
In a departure from previous years, designer Carlo Chitti placed the 1.477 litre
“Dino” Type 156 120º V-6 DOHC
engine behind the driver.
This radical design proved successful, with Ferrari’s winning the Constructor’s
Championship and Phil Hill the Driver’s Championship.
Hill became the first American to crowned Formula 1 Champion
