Matra Ford MS80  Jackie Stewart 1969 Formula 1 World Champion - Dutch GP

This limited edition art print represents the Matra Ford Cosworth MS80 in its livery at the Dutch Grand Prix, Zandvoort Park Circuit, Zandvoort Holland, 21 June 1969.

In 1968, teams toyed with flimsy wing designs mounted on tall thin pylons.  These were dangerous and contributed to several serious accidents, and were abandoned.

The 1969 Matra MS80 is one of the truly unique cars in Formula One history, in that it was the first to run with sturdy, efficient “wings”, attached firmly to the body, to increase down force, which increased the speed of the car through turns.  Common now, in 1969 it was quite a revolution.

So revolutionary in fact that, with Jackie Stewart behind the wheel, it won six of the eleven races that year.  This string of victories gave Stewart the Driver’s, and Matra the Constructor’s Championship.

The Ken Tyrrell Matra Team was also the first, if you don’t count Ferrari, to build cars outside the United Kingdom.
