Lettie G Howard - American Fredonia Fishing Schooner in color

The American Fishing Schooner Lettie G Howard

The Lettie G. Howard is the last surviving example of an American Fredonia model inshore fishing schooner, once seen in large numbers on the Eastern Seaboard.  Laid down in 1893, in Essex, Mass., she was named for the daughter of Captain Fred Howard. As built she was 74 feet in length, 21 feet in the beam and drew 8 ¼ feet – gross tonnage was just under 60 tons.

Beautiful and fast, she served in the Atlantic and Gulf coast fisheries, being refitted twice in her time; first in 1901 and again in 1924, when a diesel engine was added.  In 1967 she was retired and sold to the Historic Ships Association of Boston. She was repurchased in 1968 by the South Street Seaport Museum where she awaited a restoration.   In 1988 she was listed as a National Historic Landmark.

Between the years of 1991 to 1993, Lettie was restored to her 1893 appearance, save the fore topmast. The museum now sails her regularly, and she is certified as a training ship by the United States Coast Guard.
