RMS Titanic

Built by the firm
of
Harland & Wolff in
Belfast,
Titanic was, at the time of her launch, the largest passenger ship in the world.
Her Scotch marine boilers and steam engines
produced 59,000 horse power and drove her 882’ 9” length, and 46,328 gross
registered tons, at a top maximum speed of 26 knots.
Total capacity of 3547 passengers and crew filled
out her general characteristics.
Thought unsinkable, she none-the-less struck an iceberg in
the North Atlantic
a few minutes before midnight, 14 April 1912, and sank some two hours and forty
minutes later,
resulting in the deaths of 1,517 of the 2,223 people on
board.
The deaths were largely men, because many believed that
women and children should go first.
