USS Barb - Gato Class Fleet Submarine

This limited
edition art print represents the United States Gato Class submarine USS Barb, SS
220, commanded by Cdr. Eugene B. “Lucky” Fluckey, on its last war patrol in June
, 1945.
Cdr. Fluckey was the most decorated submarine commander of
the U S effort in World War II, and the Barb sank more tonnage of military (17
in all, including a carrier, a cruiser and a frigate) and merchant vessels than
any other submarine.
USS Barb was commissioned July of 1942
and was sent to the Atlantic and Mediterranean, where she made her first five
war patrols.
Next she traversed
to the Pacific, where her legend was born, with an additional seven war patrols.
For these efforts, she received a Presidential Unit
Citation and her skipper, Cdr. Fluckey was awarded four Navy Crosses and the
Congressional Medal of Honor.
Cdr.
Fluckey survived the war and reached the rank of Rear Admiral.
He passed away in 1972.
