John Glenn, Friendship 7, Project Mercury,  NASA,  Cape Canaveral,  First orbital flight, Launch Complex 14

Blasting off from Cape Canaveral's Launch Complex 14, on February 20, 1962 at 9:47:39 EST, Friendship 7 took John Glenn to a successful 3 orbit flight, which made him the first American to do so.

Friendship 7 reached an altitude of 162.2 x 100 statute miles and a velocity of 17,544 mph. Total flight time was 4 hrs, 55 min, 23 sec. Distance covered was 75,679 statute miles. Max G - 7.7.

The Mission Statement read, "Place a man into orbit, observe his reactions to the space environment and safely return him to earth to a point where he can be readily found. o a point where he can be readily found."
