Train Art of the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy, built by the American Locomotive Company at Schenectady Works, New York, in the early 1940's, was one of the largest and most powerful steam engines ever constructed. The Big Boy locomotive and tender weighed 1.2 million pounds and produced 6,200 horse power.  The tender held 24,000 gallons of water and 56,000 pounds of coal.  Top speed was 80 miles per hour.

The locomotives were designed and built  to pull a 3600 ton freight train over the long 1.14% gradient between Ogden and Wasatch, Utah.  The last Big Boy was retired in July of 1962.
