Train Art of the Union Pacific Centennial, DDA40X

Train Art of the Union Pacific, DDA40X, Centennial.  Built by the Electro-Motive Division of General Motors (EMD), was, and still is, the largest diesel electric locomotive ever constructed. At 98 feet in length and weighing in at 540 thousand pounds, these giants produced 6600 horse power.

They were known as "Centennial" to honor the 100 year anniversary of the Driving of the Golden Spike in 1869, the engines carried numbers beginning with 6900.  The production run ended with 6946 - the last being delivered in 1971.

Removed from the line in 1980, the engines were stored until 1984,  when they were required again and 25 were returned service.
